Teeth cleaning with Dora has been a battle for as long as I can remember. When teeth brushing time came around each day, we’d have pursed lips, the ‘talk to the hand’ gesture and often tears. Seeing that almost all of her baby teeth were through, I was worrying more and more that her teeth weren’t getting a proper clean. I would dream about her teeth rotting and falling out.
It was time to ask an expert. On my most recent visit to the dentist, I asked my dental hygienist for some advice. We had already tried some musical teeth cleaning apps, brushing as a family, brushing in the bath, brushing her dollies teeth, all with little success.
The answer?
The Wiggles!
The DH when to her cupboard of goodies and pulled out a Wiggles rewards chart. I was skeptical but willing to try.
That evening, I explained (in toddler terms) what the rewards chart was for. Within moments, Dora had her toothbrush out and was brushing her teeth (well, with a lot of help from us). She got to choose a sticker to put on her chart morning and night. The only problem we encountered was when she wanted more than one sticker at a time… tears.
Now we have run out of stickers on our chart! Panic stations!
In Bowral this week, I saw a fabric rewards chart with velcro stars. I think I will look into buying one. The stickers won’t run out and we can use it over and over again. She seems to respond to the bribery reward system, so we will stick with it for now.
I found this one at Kids’ Rooms (UK)
Do you have a reward system in place with your kids? Does it work well?
I think the hardest thing for me is consistency.
