Toucan Art and Craft Box - December 2013We have been subscribing to the Toucan Box for about 18 months now. Every month the box is delivered to Jacob, which includes 4 different craft projects, and each monthly box has a particular theme, and for December it is the Arctic theme! All the supplies are included in the box, and you receive clear instruction booklets for each project.

Also included is a book (story or sticker) wrapped in tissue paper, which is a nice touch.

In addition you receive a badge! You collect the Toucan box badges and once you have 5 badges simply take a photo of them and email it to Toucan with your choice of gift from the list.  If you collect 5 more badges you will become a silver member and receive a free silver badge plus a free gift. If you collect 10 more badges you become a gold member, and you receive a free gold badge plus a gift.

There are two subscription options to choose from, the first one £9.95 per month + £2.95 delivery, this option includes 2 projects + a book. The second option costs £16.95 per month + £2.95 delivery, included is 4 projects + a book. You can cancel your subscription at any time.

This months 4 projects were:

  • Box 1 - Polar Bear Mask - included in this project was: a mask, sheet of card (to cut the ears out), glue, enough cotton wool to cover the mask, a little tub for the nose, and a black spot to put in the nose.
  • Box 2 - Snowflakes - included in this project was: 12 lolly sticks, glue, glitter, sequins, white paint, paint brush, glitter glue (4 different colours) and string.
  • Box 3 - Igloo - included in this project was: Paper bowl, arctic pop puppets (which you color in), coloured pens, glue, foam peanuts.
  • Box 4 - Ice painting - included in this project was: Tissue, rubber band, 3 tubs of powder paints, small cardboard tube, water color paper, polar bear stencil, glitter, white paint, and a frame - there was meant to be a sponge included, but this was missing, however I had plenty in the kitchen so it was not a problem.
Jacob's favorite project this month was the Ice painting. First we had to mix the powder paint with water and put all three tubs into the freezer until they turned into ice (Ice paint).  We then popped the ice paint cubes out of there tubs, and used the ice paint cubes with our hands to paint on the picture -it was rather messy, but loads of fun! We then placed the stencils on the painting and using the white paint and sponge, we sponged the white paint over the stencil and finally we tapped the glitter over the stencil - take it off slowly and hey pesto! we had a white glittery polar bear on our painting. With the cardboard tube we placed the tissue over one end, and secured it with the rubber band, we then pressed on the painting in the top hand corner, held it for 10 seconds, and when we took it off, it created a moon.  The other 3 projects were just as much fun, I particularly liked the snowflakes - which we have hung up in the lounge.
