Happy Emmys Sunday!
In this golden age of television, we’re all faced with an endless source of incredible programming (and some not-so-incredible…but there’s more good than bad). Yet, several times a year, we’re forced to pick the best (it’s a rough life).
So, per tradition, we’re celebrating by sharing our personal picks…as difficult as it may be. Nevertheless, we’ll venture a try. And with that, we’ll leave you to our choices, take ’em or leave ’em.
Happy Sunday to all, and happy viewing!
Outstanding Comedy Series:
Nominees:
- Black-ish (ABC)
- Master of None (Netflix)
- Modern Family (ABC)
- Silicon Valley (HBO)
- Transparent (Amazon)
- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt(Netflix)
- Veep (HBO)
Zer: “Black-ish”—“Transparent” seems to be the favorite in this category, but I think we might see an upset. “Black-ish” is funny, important, and made itself incredibly relevant in its rookie season. Don’t be surprised if they upset the expected winner.
Stephanie: “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (Netflix)—If I’m being honest, It’s probably going to be “Transparent” again, and the Netflix show that has the best shot is “Master of None,” but a girl can dream. Kimmy would.
Outstanding Drama Series:
Nominees:
- The Americans (FX)
- Better Call Saul (AMC)
- Downton Abbey (PBS)
- Game of Thrones (HBO)
- Homeland (Showtime)
- House of Cards (Netflix)
- Mr. Robot (USA)
Zer: “Mr. Robot”—Honestly, I have no idea on this one. I can see “Downton Abbey” winning as recognition for the end of their incredibly successful run. I can also see “Game of Thrones” winning because, well, it’s “Game of Thrones.” But my gut, and own personal preference is telling me “Mr. Robot” has a pretty good shot. We’ll see.
Stephanie: “Game of Thrones”—I’m going with volume here. It’s the most nominated show of the year, the odds are in my favor. Also, dragons.
Outstanding Television Movie:
Nominees:
- All the Way (HBO)
- Confirmation (HBO)
- Luther (BBC America)
- Sherlock: “The Abominable Bride” (PBS)
- A Very Murray Christmas (Netflix)
Zer: “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride”—Who knows with two HBO shows in the running. Aside from being another wonderful addition to this amazinf series, “Sherlock” has proven it has Emmy winning power in the past.
Stephanie: “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride”—I allow for a possible “Luther” upset, but “Sherlock” is an Emmy favorite, and a fantastic show to boot. Therefore, it’s my deduction that they will take home the Emmy tonight.
Outstanding Limited Series (formerly known as the Mini-Series):
Nominees:
- American Crime (ABC)
- Fargo (FX)
- The Night Manager (AMC)
- The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story (FX)
- Roots (History)
Zer: “The Night Manager”—Full disclosure, this is the only nominated program in this category that I took the time to watch. So I might be a little biased. But with a cast including Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston, the odds are in its favor.
Stephanie: “The Night Manager”—I won’t be stunned if “The People v. O.J. Simpson” or “Fargo” take this, but “The Night Manager” was a wonderful surprise of a miniseries featuring Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie (which never hurts), so I’m sticking with it.
Outstanding Variety Series (Talk):
Nominees:
- Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (Crackle)
- The Late Late Show with James Corden (CBS)
- Jimmy Kimmel Live! (ABC)
- Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)
- Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO)
- The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (NBC)
Zer: “The Late Late Show with James Corden”—It’s hard to believe that Mr. Corden took over this show just over a year ago. He very quickly made it his own and made himself a household name. Plus, “Carpool Karaoke” deserves its own Emmy.
Stephanie: “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”—Not going to lie, it was tough to decide between all of the (very talented) white guys, but I’m thinking one way or another this is going to a Brit…which allows for a James Corden upset.
