Unusual Baby Names of 2012

Posted on the 15 January 2013 by Suzanne Robinson @mummy2twinsblog

Today I saw an article that listed the most unusual baby names of 2012.   I for one find most of the names on this list very odd indeed, however as the article stated, nearly all of the names has been given to at least two children last year and these are real people who will have to live with these names, so be kind and sensitive.

Some of the girl’s names:

  • Sesame
  • Yoga
  • Zealand
  • Thinn
  • Excel
  • Deva
  • Jury
  • Oasis
  • Sanity
  • Ace
  • Admire

Some of the boy’s names:

  • Ball
  • Drifter
  • Goodluck
  • Google
  • Hippo
  • Four
  • Popeye
  • Vice
  • Thunder
  • Jedi
  • Turbo

I believe that a name sets you up for life. I am very traditional with my name selections for the twins and I liked the idea that they can have it when young and when they are older. The names I selected allows them to go into any field without people looking twice at their name. We also opted for traditional spelling that makes it easy for anyone to quickly know how to spell their names.

I am not against new names and feel that some are just great as well, however I draw the line on calling a child Hippo or Ball, or even Yoga or Sanity. You never know some of these babies that have been blessed with these new names might become the next entertainers or go getter’s in our society and the name will be the way to identify who they are, they will work with the brand they have and own it. Some kids will love it and others will hate it, it is up to the individual. My other fear is that it sets up expectations when you hear a name.

What are your thoughts on the new names? It is a personal thing a name and I am sure some people would not like the choices I made either, so I will agree to disagree. I just wonder how many of these children will want to change it or if they have a middle name that is preferred they might want to go by that instead.
