For the vegetarian, walking through the roasting rows at Taste of Chicago can feel like dying of thirst at sea. But meatless treasures are just around the corner, if you know how to look, and look out. -Chicago Tribune
Food festivals are more generally geared towards our omnivorous friends, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find something or other nosh on while they’re scarfing down a footlong corn dog. I’d have to disagree with the quote above though. You won’t find ‘meatless treasures’ per se, more like ‘eh, this will do I guess.’
Now, behold the most overpriced two cups of chopped salad you will ever lay eyes on. This is from Pazzo’s (booth #38) and cost me 10 tickets ($5). A lot of the meatier things go for less than 10 tickets which is astounding considering lettuce and corn costs a lot less than rib tips. But maybe Pazzo’s know they have a monopoly on this vegan and gluten-free salad so they’re jacking up the price… hmmm.
We pooled our remaining tickets for some watermelon Italian ice which was so worth the 6 tickets. I mean, just look how pretty it is! Nom.
Some other options available for the veggie crowd are corn on the cob from O’Briens (make sure to ask them to hold the butter) and fries from an array of booths. Like I said, definitely NOT ‘meatless treasures’ but something to eat nontheless.
