Volunteers, #859

On a volunteer day in my son’s classroom. He was so excited to have me there!

It’s volunteer day in my son’s classroom.  I love spending time with him and his friends at school and wish I had more time to do it.  There is nothing more rewarding than helping out a bunch of eager 1st and 2nd graders.

Today’s volunteer time will be a bit bittersweet for me.  I have been going into the classroom once every month since the beginning of the school year, but today is my last time.  In January, I will have a less flexible schedule and will begin working full time.  Though extraordinarily busy now, I have managed to squeeze in little chunks of opportunity here and there.  Eventually, I might be able to volunteer in his classroom again…but not in the beginning of a new job.

I told my son yesterday that I would be coming to his classroom today and that it may be the last time for the school year.  I could see the disappointment in his eyes and instantly felt guilty.  His wheels were working though, because a little later, my son approached “Daddy” to see if he could possibly come to the classroom every once in awhile to “work at centers.”  Yes, Daddy!!!  Time to roll up your sleeves and pitch in!

So, when the 2nd semester volunteer sign up sheet comes out, it’s Daddy’s turn.  (I’m a little jealous!)

My song of the day is “Volunteers” by Jefferson Airplane.  They wrote the song back in the ’60′s speaking mostly in part about the people giving their heart and soul in the anti-war campaigns of the time and age.  There are so many opportunities for volunteering that make a huge difference in a community, and for me,  I will really miss volunteering in my son’s sweet little community.  Click HERE to hear “Volunteers” as I really appreciate this one good last special day.  On to the next thing!
