When my daughter was born, 8-1/2 years ago, she had colic. I was so sleep deprived, and in desperation one day, I cried to my mother, “When will I ever get a good night’s sleep again?” My Mom, a realist, replied in all sincerity, “Not for the next 18 years.” I was horrified as a new mother, but now, 8 years later, I can honestly say she was right.
We had family visiting in Phoenix yesterday and spent the day with them. We wanted to get the most out of the visit, so we stayed late knowing we wouldn’t get home until late, too. The kids slept in the car as we pulled into our driveway at around midnight. You would have thought they would have slept in late into the morning, but at 7:30 am, my son came bouncing into my room crying, “I can’t find the remote control for the the XBox!”
7:30 am might sound pretty late to some parents, but when you go to bed after midnight, you’d think that they’d be sleeping all morning long. Nope…no way….not with kids. They see the sunshine, and their eyes are open in a flash with boundless energy ready to start the day. They see no mercy for their parents either knowing that we are the providers for all of their needs. ”I need breakfast.” ”I need a blanket.” ”I need the XBox remote control!’ And on, and on, and on they go…….
So, when you see me with piles of makeup on covering the bags under my eyes and the big Grande Starbucks in hand, you’ll understand why. I am a sleep deprived Mommy today, but I also have kids who spent a fabulous day of memory-making with their out-of-town Uncle.
My song of the day is an ’80′s Flashback. ”Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” by Wham was such a silly upbeat bubblegum pop song back in the day, but today I am singing along with a touch of sarcasm in my voice. My kids wake me up before they go and go and go and go….like the Energizer Bunnies. Click HERE to go to Youtube to hear it and to see George Michael in those ridiculous short shorts. Despite the funny clothing, George will always put “the boom boom into my heart” with this song, so enjoy the charm and please send some prayers that I get a good night’s sleep tonight.
