Want To Work From Home? Pros And Cons Of A Home Based Business

It’s a dream of many mums to be able to work from home so they can still take care of family while bringing in extra income. An even better fantasy is to replace a full time income and really build a sustainable long term business all from the comfort of home.

Now, the beautiful thing about starting a business these days is how possible it is to achieve this thanks to the internet. You can run a business as big or as small as you need it to be all from home while you juggle the rest of your family life and responsibilities.

Yet, there are not just pros involved. There are some disadvantages to running a business from home so it pays to know what you are getting into before you get started. For starters, there are a lot of moving parts especially if you are selling a physical product that needs to be shipped. From hiring a company like Rush Courier to deliver your products, to making sure that you have the legal ability to sell them, a lot goes into the process.

In this article, I will go over the pros and cons of a home based business so you can know if it is going to be right for you.

Pro - No commute

So much time is wasted sitting in a car in traffic trying to get to work that could be better spent at home, taking care of your family. It is a mental health killer as well as the monotony of doing this every day takes a toll on you.

Then there is the issue of declining mobility for some people who struggle to get to work if it is not close to home.

Then, lastly, there is the cost. It is not cheap taking the commuter train to work and even wasting all that petrol trying to get there adds up. It sometimes doesn’t make financial sense depending on how much of a salary you are making to commute.

Pro - Low barrier to entry

If you were to try to start a business in a brick and mortar location, there are so many hurdles from permits to the cost of getting started that it may prove to be too much. It takes a lot longer to start a traditional physical business and that also puts people off.

Doing things from home is a good solution for people that are low on finances and don’t have as much time as they wish. It is still possible to start a part time business that can be done in your downtime throughout the course of the day.

This flexible schedule is what allows many stay at home mums to be able to still create a business that otherwise would be out of reach.

Con - Isolation

Many mums look forward to getting to work and have a break from home life. It affords the possibility to use your brain to work on other problems that doesn’t involve family or household chores.

This is not an option for those that work from home. It can be quite isolating as you are always at home and dealing with family issues on top of your work.
