Watch: The Return- a Short Film Starring Geraldine Chaplin as Coco Chanel

I hope your holidays were full of joy and laughter, and above all, a chance to relax and exhale, if only for a few days, before the daily grind starts again in the new year. Over here at Marthafied HQ it has been very peaceful and a great opportunity to catch up with friends and much missed sleep. The lead up to Christmas is always especially hectic. Added to that was a cold I had coming on for weeks, which then decided to hit me with full force only a few days before the festivities, so yes, much chocolate has been needed to nurse myself back to health.

Now that we are in between parties, with New Year’s being only a few days away, I thought I would share with you a short film I watched for the first time about a month ago. You may remember I wrote about  the Chanel Métiers d’Art show a few weeks back, which took place in Dallas, Texas. Before the runway show,  guests were treated to a brand new short film directed by Chanel’s head designer and Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld called The Return. Geraldine Chaplin stars as Coco Chanel in her twilight years, the years leading up to her big return after the French had written her off as a relic of the past and the Americans stepped in to embrace her as the icon she was and the legend she was to become.

Geraldine Chaplin as Coco Chanel is simply marvelous. At one point Karl Lagerfeld instructed her to act Coco as “a bitch”, as that apparently what she was a lot of the time. To which, Geraldine answered, she had absolutely no problem to do. But she embodies the creative spirit of a genius, with deft hands and a dangling cigarette, so eloquently, it is not bitchiness for attitude’s sake. It is great talent  mixed with insecurity with bark being worse than its bite.

So, if you have 25 minutes, grab a cup of coffee and watch The Return. Rupert Everett makes a lovely appearance as a reporter interviewing  Coco. If they’ll ever make a big screen film about Coco Chanel again, I am sure Geraldine Chaplin must be in the running for the role. I could even see Academy Awards in the horizon for her. She simply is that good in the role.
