The very first rock concert I ever went to was on October 22, 1986. I saw Billy Joel’s “Bridge” tour at The Centrum in Worcester, Massachusettes. It was the opening night on the tour, and Joel sang “Uptown Girl” to Christie Brinkley as she strutted across the stage. I watched and listened in awe, and that evening was the beginning of a life long obsession with rock concerts. I have been to more concerts than I can count, though as an adult with children, I don’t attend as many as I used to in my carefree single days.
About a year ago, my daughter came home with a declaration. ”Mommy, I don’t like Justin Bieber anymore. I like the Go-Go’s.” Sad that she was over her first childhood celebrity crush, I was also ecstatic that she was listening to something that I like to listen to, too. I ordered the Go-Go’s “Beauty and the Beat” CD from Amazon that day! So, when I saw they were coming to Tucson this summer with the B-52′s, I knew this was a concert we had to see together. She likes the B-52′s, too. Yep, my girl boogies on down to “Rock Lobster” and “Love Shack,” and I love that she’s so funky cool!
So, my daughter, her best buddy, and her best buddy’s Mom & I will be seeing out daughters’ first rock concert together this summer, and I am beyond excited that I get to share this moment with them! My parents would only take me to orchestras and musicals when I was little, and aren’t I just the coolest Mama on the planet? Ha!
My song of the day is my daughter’s pick. She is most excited to hear the Go-Go’s sing “We’ve Got the Beat,” I know it will be a meaningful moment for her when those first chords and drum beats fill Ava Amphitheater in Tucson on that hot night in July. Click HERE to hear the song as we try to contain our excitement until that night comes. Rock on y’all. I hope you all get to some fun concerts this summer, too!
