We’re Servers…Not Babysitters

The worst parenting I’ve ever seen… and the kid didn’t do anything
wrong! I work at a major franchise restaurant with a bar. Two parents
came in around 9 pm and immediately head straight for the bar in our
restaurant. They DID have a five or six-year-old daughter with them,
although I doubt if they noticed! They never ordered any food – just
beers. Their particularly dirty and hair-unbrushed daughter wandered
the restaurant for about two hours, looking particularly bored,
playing on our casino machines (although they were demo games since
she didn’t have any quarters) sitting in empty tables, and actually
coming to the kitchen. She came up to me and told me she was hungry,
and I had to tell her to go let her – now very drunk – parents know. I
eventually complained to our manager, who had to tell me what we can’t
tell our guests how to raise their children. A lot of our servers are
parents themselves, and it was everything we could do to not call CPS.
Eventually they left, but I was truly disturbed by the fact that their
daughter could have been taken, or just walked out the door and it
would have been hours before they’d noticed.
