Wedding Photography at Sherborne Abbey: The Ceremony

Posted on the 08 September 2016 by Belinda Mccarthy @b_mccarthyphoto

It's time to revisit this fabulous wedding I photographed in Sherborne, Dorset a little earlier this year. You may have already seen the bridal prep blog for this lovely wedding (and if you haven't, go take a peek!), but now it's time to take a look at the main event - the wedding ceremony. And what a ceremony it was! So let's take a look at my favourite shots from the wedding photography at Sherborne Abbey, where the ceremony was held.

Sherborne Abbey is absolutely my favourite wedding ceremony venue in Dorset, for after all, how can you top such incredible architecture and presence? I know I write a lot about this amazing abbey, but truly, even if you're not getting married, it's absolutely a must-visit location, particularly if you are lucky enough to hear the incredible choir singing there. But if you do live in the Sherborne area and are planning to get married, there is no better place to exchange your vows in front of your friends, family and Him upstairs. I am always awed by Sherborne Abbey every single time I visit it, and I know you will be too.

But back to the matter of the blog and this wonderful wedding I was lucky enough to photograph there! From a photographer's perspective, wedding photography at Sherborne Abbey is about as good as it gets, as long as you are quiet, respectful and stay hidden as much as possible. One of the downsides, of course, is that when you're working in such a huge space, there's a lot of ground to cover from the back of the Abbey to the front - so it's really important to think ahead and change position quickly (and very quietly) so you are in the right place at the right time! For me, it's an absolute no-no to walk around during the actual service (I only change position during hymns so that I don't disturb proceedings in any way). That's where having an experienced wedding photographer who has already built up a rapport with the resident church officials can be really important; for if there is a trust relationship already there, the wedding photographer can have much more potential to document your wedding.

So, let's get to the pictures.... and I am so happy to show you some of my favourite moments from my wedding photography at Sherborne Abbey for this fabulous couple. By the way, I'm often asked, 'you show a lot of black and white images on your blog, do you offer colour as well?" The answer is, absolutely yes, of course! The balance of black and white to colour is ultimately down to the bride and groom's choice, and I've photographed weddings (including at Sherborne Abbey) where I've been asked to present my images in total colour. I'm happy to do either 🙂
