It's absolutely a privilege to photograph a magnificent Wells Cathedral Wedding - and not an honour that comes along every day for a wedding photographer! Of course, along with the excitement at the photographic opportunities, comes the concern that you just can't do justice to such an impressive location!
Wells Cathedral is huge - over 400 feet long - and as such, as many different areas which are used for worship. This particular Wells Cathedral wedding ceremony was held in the Quire, which is - if you like - a cathedral inside the cathedral! Wedding photographers are not permitted to enter the Quire during the service, but due to the many open window and door apertures which lead onto the main Cathedral, I was able to photograph the ceremony well and from many different angles, in a highly documentary fashion and without interrupting the proceedings in any way. Additionally, I was granted access to an elevated position above the Quire via a small private stairway, which allowed me to photograph proceedings from above, as well.
After the ceremony, I was also permitted to take the bride and groom to a private stairway for a short session of couples photography. Yes, it involved me grovelling on a cold, hard stone floor to get the shot, but it was certainly worth it!
There's no other word to use for this wedding ceremony other than magnificent - and yes, I've used it before, but nothing else comes close! What a wonderful day to be a part of - and of course it didn't stop there, for the wedding party then moved to the adjacent Bishops Palace, where I've photographed often before, for the reception and the celebrations.
