Blogging is a lot of fun. It’s a way to express yourself, offer people advice and make a little bit of extra money on the side. As side hustles go, blogging is definitely one of the most popular options as pretty much anyone can do it.
No matter what your interests are or how experienced you are as a writer, there is a real joy that comes with writing down and sharing your thoughts. Though an audience may not appear overnight or be the people you imagined, as your audience grows, it’s difficult not to feel just a bit proud of what you have achieved. But if you have never blogged before, what do you need to get started?
Initial Ideas
Before you start blogging, you should decide what sort of blog you would like to write. Finding a niche is important if you want to earn some money from blogging but you also need to make sure that you will enjoy what you are writing about. Keeping a blog going for a long time is a difficult challenge if you pick something you aren’t really that interested in.
You should also make sure that whichever niche you pick, you will always have some room to grow. For example, if your niche is for young parents interested in homeschooling, you would be able to branch out into general parenting tips and educational advice and resources. Though having a niche is important, you shouldn’t end up feeling trapped by it.
When you are settled on a niche, you should think about what you would like to call your blog. The title should be memorable and relevant to your topic but you are also a little bit more limited as you will also need to find a domain name to suit. Though your domain name and title don’t have to be the same, it is advisable to make your blog easy to remember and find.
Where to Spend Your Money.
If you want to blog regularly, you should make sure that you have access to a laptop or computer with an internet connection (not too difficult these days!). The speed of your computer is important though as if your PC is running too slowly, it can get really frustrating when you are trying to flick between writing and researching. The best advice for a serious blogger is to make sure that your internet and PC speeds aren’t going to hold you back! The next thing you need to do is buy a domain name and start creating your website. For now, you should start by using one of the templates available to you. There is no shame in using a free template either. This is a nice easy way to get started and you can still customize the site with a color scheme, font and images. And, since many blog readers will read a few blogs, using a template will give your new blog an immediate sense of familiarity.
Start Writing!
It will take a little while for you to settle into writing your blog posts so to begin with, the best advice is to just have a bit of fun. No matter what your subject is, your first few blog posts should aim to introduce a few of the ideas and subject areas you would like to explore later on. Writer’s block is a really common frustration for bloggers that happens to the best of us so if you are really stuck, go and make a brew, do a bit of aimless web surfing and just let an idea come to you. If you are still having a hard time thinking about what you should be writing and how to structure your work, it could be worth looking at a list of ideas. This list of 189 creative blog ideas might be business based but scrolling through, you are bound to find a bit of inspiration here somewhere. And, hey, writer’s block itself can be an interesting subject! Starting a successful blog is often a lot harder than most bloggers imagine. You won’t have thousands of readers on your first try and you will have to do a lot of social media posts to build up your audience. However, with all this effort comes a lot of fulfillment. You are about to learn so much about how to interest people and bring people together that you really have no idea what can be possible with even the simplest blog site. Be persistent. Be patient. Keep writing and sharing and you will get there. K Elizabeth xoxo xoxo
