What True Modernity is and How Our Perception Differs.

There is one thing that is gaining sound prosperity in Pakistan and that is our fashion and drama industry and now our film industry is also coming back in the lime light after “Khuda ke liye”, “Bol”, “Love mein gumm” , some more and the new “Main hoon Shahid Afridi”. This is not, in any way, helping in the growth of Pakistan’s economy, sadly. We are proceeding towards our decline day by day.

One wonders that the rate at which the economy is declining is shocking but the film producers have got so much money that they can make astounding movies worth millions! And then the ravishingly beautiful ladies come on screen displaying more skin than Hollywood and Bollywood actresses, without a care in the world. Our Pakistani film-makers have also started including “item songs”, which have been highly popular in India. Then a turn of events which makes me laugh is that the actresses dancing in those vulgar songs, wearing scanty clothes hardly covering their bodies, speak against prostitution and rape and start NGOs for the protection of women rights. How hilarious is that? Another surprising thing is that those actresses, in the interviews following the release of their movies, claim that the success their movies got was all because of Allah’s help and Allah helped them make their movie a hit, a blockbuster! How they get the shamelessness to say that, I can’t imagine when it’s the same Allah, our Creator, who has commanded us to cover ourselves up properly. A few verses from the Holy Quran are proofs:

“O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
Surah Al-’Ahzab [33:59]

“And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.”

Surah An-Nur [24:31]

This is the beauty of Islam and the beautiful commandments of Allah. The people of other religions think that Muslim women are conservative and narrow minded in this regard. Even some Muslims themselves think along the same lines, hence the accelerated prevalence of skin-showing being largely accepted and revolutionized in Pakistan- an Islamic Republic. This is considered to be modern. Our runway models, all actresses, morning show hosts, film actresses, clothing designers, all of them practice a healthy amount of skin- showing and this is actually loved by most of the masses. They don’t care if these people have hardly studied beyond intermediate or Bachelors. As long as they copy the West and India, they’re modern. Some of these people are also very highly educated, but not educated in the religious perspective. Religion is now being commercialized in our country. We have destroyed the roots over which our country got independent and now are using it as a tool for increasing a certain television show’s TRP, for example.

Our leader who got us an independent piece of land for ourselves, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, once said:

“Pakistan not only means freedom and independence but the Muslim Ideology which has to be preserved, which has come to us as a precious gift and treasure and which, we hope other will share with us”

I wonder how we’re preserving our Muslim ideology? All over Pakistan, women are throwing away one piece of their attire after another, guiding their children to do the same, to expose their bodies, wear tight fit jeans and T-shirts,sleevelss tops, to take off the scarves covering their heads and to expose any part of their beauty that they possibly can. This, according to them, is NOT conservative. And now I ask you one question. Isn’t that what goes on in the West? Haven’t we started being exactly like them? Isn’t this kind of behavior conservative? What are our standards? Why do we mold ourselves to follow Islam in the ways we like and discard its other teachings of which we are against? Do we consider the Muslim ladies of Prophet Muhammad’s (Peace Be Upon Him) time who were the most educated in every aspect, used to bring their education into practice  and yet covered themselves up properly for the sake of Allah, conservative? Why isn’t that true broad-mindedness thought to be modern? Why have we chosen the wrong set of words? Why is the Western conservative attitude thought to be broad minded?

One must remember that humans are different from animals in many ways and one of them is that we are meant to cover ourselves up. Animals, having no sense, don’t do that. Unfortunately, the women of our society are slowly and gradually wiping off their virtues and reducing themselves to the status of animals, just like many non Muslim women.

The reason why Hijaab is made compulsory by Allah for Muslim women is for their own protection. The people of Pakistan, the general middle class and lower class masses still practice hijaab. In other non-Muslim countries, this is not the case at all, hence the high rape rates. Did you know that:

  • Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted.1
  • There is an average of 207,754 victims (age 12 or older) of sexual assault each year.

Here are the statistics of the top 10 countries with the highest reported rape incidents:

I hope you all realize why this is. There are people like us in those countries with the highest rape rates. Most of them are not even third world! Then why the increasing rape? Why are they so helpless in this matter even when they’ve got top of the class security, women rights activists and everything? The problem lies in the way their women are displayed so enticingly everywhere and not just on screens and bill boards like Pakistan. We still have time, my Pakistani brothers and sisters, to improve ourselves and grasp our roots. Otherwise, we’ll be destroyed through and through. When a nation doesnot stay true to its ideology, the nation is not a nation anymore. Our ideology is Islam and we should idealize it in EVERY way. May Pakistan prosper and may Allah guide us. Aameen.
