It’s so easy getting into a routine that we often take for granted that some things get worn out a lot sooner than you think. Here we take a look at some of the things you should be replacing before they break! Some of these may surprise you!
Your showerhead
Yep. Something we use every day without thinking. But did you know that your shower head needs replacing at least every six months? That’s right – water passing through the head every single day makes it a breeding ground for bacteria and can also deteriorate, making your daily shower less and less invigorating!
Getting a replacement shower head will make your shower a healthier and more revitalising place!
Shower puffs and sponges
Staying in the bathroom - These should be replaced once a month as soap and mildew can build up in them due to constant exposure to moisture. Be sure to squeeze them out thoroughly after each use, and hang them in a dry area to reduce mildew build-up in between replacements.
Your toothbrush
According to official bodies, you should replace your toothbrushes every three months. This time frame should be reduced to 6 to 8 weeks if you have gum disease. If you feel the need to sanitize them in between, you can boil them or soak them in mouthwash.
Kitchen sponges
Kitchen sponges should be replaced every few weeks depending on how often you use them. In between replacements, sponges can be sanitized by wetting and popping them in the microwave for 30-60 seconds, or by running them through a high heat water cycle in the dishwasher. It is especially important to sanitize your sponges often if you use them to clean dishes and cookware that were exposed to raw meat.
Smoke Detector Batteries
Smoke detectors should be tested once a month to ensure they are functioning properly and that the batteries are still working at capacity. Check them more often than that if you wish.
Oil based air freshener plug ins
The actual container of oil should be replaced every 3-4 weeks in an oil-based plugin or before it has burnt out. Check it daily to ensure it hasn’t burned down too low. This could result in a fire. The plugin base should be replaced every 3 months, as it builds dust and oil residue over time (which can reduce its effectiveness).
Your pillow
Everyone has their favorite pillow, right? But did you know that holding onto your pillow for longer than six months creates a build up of dirt and dust mites – which can lead to acne, and allergy problems? Replacing your pillows every six months will ensure that you really do get a good night’s sleep!
