In my opinion, it only happens a few rare times in a lifetime that you can say you were truly handed over the gift of a blessing. That was the case exactly 10 years ago today when my beautiful daughter was born. She is the epitome of everything that is wonderful wrapped up into one body, and yes, she is my little blessing and symbol of everything that is good in the world.
We had to mark the significant double digits with grandeur, and to fulfill her wishes, we allowed her to invite a bevy of giggling girls to sleep over and then to wake up in the morning to head to a nail salon for manis and pedis. Her wish, and I, of course, want every one of her dreams to come true.
(1) Wish #1: A slumber party
(2) Wish #2: A “Frozen” Theme
(3) Wish #3: A new bike
(4) Wish #4: Manis/Pedis with her BFF’s
All wishes fulfilled, we ended yesterday’s festivities with a very special Girl Scout flying ceremony. Yesterday was also the day chosen to mark the moment of going from Brownie to Girl Scout, and our troop leaders worked really hard to make the celebration a rite of passage. They planned a surprise dove release for the girls, and the timing couldn’t have been better. As the troop leader pointed out that a mother watches her children grow and then lets them go to their freedom just as the girls would be releasing the doves to freedom, I could feel the tears stinging my eyes.
Yes, my beautiful little dove is 10 years-old today, and admitting that she is growing up is a bit of a hard pill to swallow. I am honored and humbled to be this amazing creature’s mother. She has filled my love with joy from the moment I set eyes on her.
Today, the song I have chosen for her is Lynard Skynard’s “White Dove,” because even though I am not quite ready to set her free to the wind, she is one step closer today. Happy birthday, my dear girl. I love you! May your every wish come true. xo
