Travel is something that's never too far from my mind, and it seems that my wishlist of places to visit gets longer by the day. Germany has long been on my wishlist of countries to visit and although we haven't made it there yet, we have plans to visit Hamburg later this year as its somewhere my children are keen to explore. Another destination that's recently been added to my travel wishlist is Düsseldorf - a picturesque city in the north-east of Germany known for its art and fashion scene. Did you know it's also a popular destination for health tourism?
Today I'm going to share some insight into why a trip to Düsseldorf is on my radar and why it should be on yours too.
Visiting Düsseldorf
Düsseldorf is located on the Rhine river, and is a decent size without being as overwhelming as some of the larger cities can be. It's actually known as the 15 minute city as everything is no more than 15 minutes apart! It boasts many world-class hotels, shopping opportunities, and award-winning restaurants making it an ideal destination for a city break. A stroll along the Rhine embankment promenade is the ideal way to relax offering a stunning panoramic view of the mighty, meandering river with its three great bridges. Alternatively, you may wish to visit Altstadt (also known as the Old Town), here you can dive back into the lively cheer of Rhenish joie de vivre. You can sample an enormous range of delicacies on sale at the market on Carlsplatz which is just a stone’s throw from the world-famous shopping street, Königsallee - home to international luxury labels and exclusive boutiques as well as art galleries, illustrious hotels and cafés.Art and culture also play a special role in Düsseldorf life. The Kunstakademie was founded in 1773, where world renowned artists such as Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter and Andreas Gursky studied and taught. If you're looking for world-class exhibitions then you need to visit the Kunstsammlung NRW art collection or the Museum Kunstpalast which shows paintings by artists ranging from Rubens to Kandinsky. Opera and classical music fans will appreciate the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the Tonhalle which is home to the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra. Those who prefer it a little quieter can visit Schloss Benrath (Benrath Palace), a gem with an impressive and imposing park. The MedienHafen features exciting modern architecture, most notably the striking buildings designed by Frank O. Gehry, who was also responsible for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
Health Tourism In Düsseldorf As well as being the ideal destination for a city break, Düsseldorf also happens to be the perfect city to receive state-of-the-art medical care. You could spent a couple of days enjoying the many delights that Düsseldorf has to offer before having a procedure carried out and recovering in your comfortable hotel, while your family and friends continue to soak up the atmosphere and entertainment in this vibrant and lively city. There are many different types of treatments on offer, such as Neurosurgery which deals with all diseases in which nerve tissue is pressed, degenerated or shows functional disorders. In addition, there are diseases of the vessels, which can have an effect on the nerve tissue. There is no other specialty that has such a rapid development as neurosurgery. With the help of stereotaxy and neuronavigation, probes can be placed with millimeter precision by a neurosurgeon. The future of neurosurgery lies in the modulation of brain and nerve functions. Examples are the treatment of tremor in Parkinson’s disease or nerve stimulation in therapy-resistant pain...something I'm particularly interested in as a chronic pain sufferer who has struggled to find effective treatments at home.
Damaged nerves can lead to major health challenges for affected patients. If a nerve is permanently damaged, this often means chronic pain can result. The daily accompanying symptoms are not to be underestimated – often the patients complain about strong pain impulses, which make normal lying or even sleeping impossible. The minimally invasive insertion of a neurostimulator can provide targeted relief for the aforementioned impairments. With this method, the pain at the nerve root is switched off or reprogrammed with the help of electrodes. The advantage of such an intervention, is the adaptable control and subsequent regulation by specialists in neurosurgery.
