Set between Loire Valley and Pyrenees
mountains in southwest France is Dordogne, a departement
named after the river that runs through it. It's beautiful whatever season you
decide to visit in, and it has lovely warm summers, making it an ideal holiday
spot.
Even better, flights take less than two
hours from the UK, which is always a consideration when you're traveling with
young children. Plus, there's so much to do in Dordogne that can be enjoyed by
all the family, whatever their age.
Here are my top three picks for a family
friendly holiday in Dordogne:
1. Go to a Water Park
If you're planning to hire a car in Dordogne, I recommend making
the trip to Aux Etangs du Bos,
a huge water park with heated swimming pools, inflatables and mini slides that
are suitable for kids of all ages.
It's just under an hour's drive away from the centre, but it's
completely worth the journey as you'll probably spend the entire day there. As
well as the pools, they have a theme park on-site with trampolines, bowling and
'bumper boats', the chance to hire a pedal boat or an electric boat, and even a
place for fishing if that's what you're into!
2. Visit a Castle
Inquisitive minds, both young and old, will love a trip to Château
de Castelnaud, which was built on a rocky outcrop in Périgord Noir. Not only is
it a breath-taking medieval fortress but it also has a gorgeous panoramic view
over the Dordogne Valley and a fascinating history that you can learn more about.
Check out their packed
programme for kids before you visit, which includes activities like
archery, trying on 15th century armour, firing a trebuchet model and watching a
blacksmith forge a sword. It's probably best to book these in advance though as
it can get busy during the peak summer seasons and you won't want to miss out!
3. Experience the
Great Outdoors by Camping
You can make your holiday to France even better by making it a
camping trip, which means there will be other families with children to
socialise with and loads of amenities right on your doorstep. There are plenty
of spots near Dordogne if
you're looking for camping holidays in France and the kids are sure to love
spending more time in the great outdoors.
If you're looking for a holiday spot with young children, put
Dordogne right to the top of your list. It's got nature, history, fun
activities... in fact, there's loads to do for both adults and children alike, so
you won't hear any "I'm bored" moans during the trip! Stress-free,
warm weather and entertainment for all the family - what more could you want
from a holiday?
