Why So Serious?

Posted on the 23 May 2011 by Lauramoodley

While spending my day in the Paris Modern art Gallery: the Centre George Pomidou, with my friend, I realized jus how different certain people can look at art.

I once wrote an article about the lack of logic in art, but this time i found myself asking why the other patrons took it all so seriously. There are times when art is serious and painful and dark, but there are other time when it is just plain funny.

Being Scotish and just being me infact, I have a real sense of fun and a totally sarcastic sense of humor, as does said friend. Many a time going round the exhibitions we found ourselves grasping our stomachs and falling over in fits of laughter as we tried to make sense of the senseless images and sculptures before us.

We interpreted the art in our own way, we anjoyed it, interacted with it and got inspiration from it. Now isnt that what art is about?

So why all the glum, serious, expressionless faces standing around in the huge white halls that are art galleries? The dirty looks that were flashed in our direction made us laugh all the harder, its not like we are un educated imbeciles, we are both art graduates who appreciate art, who live art. But we just think outside of the box. Its a public space, its not a library where people are reading, so why the deadly scilence?

I figure that the point of art was to cause debate, to make us think and to reach our deepest emotions, isnt humor and laughter all part of that experience? In no way did i think that the pieces were stupid or pointless, we had anecdotes and interpretations of each, we debated, we explored and we engorged ourselves in the experience of the museum. But i couldn’t help feeling that heavy weight of judgment coming from the curators and visitors beside us.

Maybe if we really open our minds, and take that pole out from up our asses, we can see that the things around us can be funny, can be light can be enjoyed, and that remaining on the fence, expressionless, emotionless is not doing us any favors as people, but is infact locking ourselves in increasingly smaller boxes.

I recommend to you all, that you all open your box, get to your local art gallery and feel something, experience an uncontrollable emotion like laughter or sadness and participate in, experience the world around you.

Bringing laughter and fun to a museum near you someday xoxo LLM
