Women Doing Business: Lauren, Elisabeth Ashlie Jewelry

Posted on the 30 March 2012 by Gandbblog @GandBblog
Well, hello there. I'm Lauren and I blog over @ From My Grey Desk.
The lovely Melissa asked me to contribute to her women doing business series and I'm thrilled to be here! I co-own a handmade jewelry business with my sister, who just so happens to be the girl with the great hair from The Small Things Blog.
How we got started:
Elisabeth Ashlie Jewelry began in July of 2010, while I was staying with my sister for a few weeks. She spotted a beautiful necklace at Target that she loved, but wasn't willing to pay the price for. So, we headed on over to Michael's and bought some beads and other goodies. That night, she made a necklace very similar to the one at Target and we knew we were on to something. For the next three weeks, we went to Michael's and other jewelry supply stores at least once a day (and no, I'm not exaggerating!) and spent many late nights coming up with new designs and creations. We opened up our Etsy shop and have been loving it ever since!

We've participated in a few local craft shows and hope to do more in the future!

How I balance running a business, being in school, and having a part-time job:
I'll be honest, it isn't easy, but it's definitely worth it! I'm able to balance my jewelry business with my other, daily-life stuff because I prioritize jewelry. It's something that I love to do, so I make sure to make time to do it!
What I've learned:
I've learned a lot from owning a business, and doing it with my sister. First, communication is key. Especially in a partnership, it's so important to make sure that you're on the same page with the other person and that you have the same vision. Second, if you're heart isn't in it, you probably won't enjoy it. The moment that jewelry making becomes more of a chore than a passion, I probably won't continue the business. Since it's more of a hobby business and not my livelihood, I don't depend on it. But, since I totally love it, I'll continue to work hard at it. And finally, I've learned that you really can do anything you put your mind to. I never would have thought that I'd make jewelry, let alone turn it into a successful business! It's all a matter of passion, hard work, and a willingness to do whatever it takes for your business to succeed.
My sister's and my blog have definitely helped to increase traffic to our Etsy shop, as well as having a Facebook fan page, twitter, and doing local craft fairs. If you have a business or are thinking about starting one and don't know how to get the word out...I have two words for you: social media, baby!
If you guys have any questions at all, feel free to contact me via our Etsy shop or my e-mail (which is on my blog, under "contact")
So happy to be able to share a little about my business with you guys!
