You Don’t Bring Me Flowers, #845

I had a fairy tale of an afternoon yesterday, and I am thrilled that to say that I shared all that loveliness with my very special mother.  Her birthday is coming up next week.  It’s a big one, and I wanted to mark this significant number with a memory that I knew she would cherish for years to come.  So, here’s what we did…

After I picked her up, we had amazingly delicious salads at Tucson restaurant Piazza Gavi.  It was a perfect atmosphere for a quiet ladies’ lunch, and it was a great way to start enjoying our time together.

After we were well nourished, that’s when the real fun began.  Our afternoon activity was a surprise for my Mom, and she had no idea what we were doing until I pulled up to her favorite Tucson flower shop, Villa Feliz.  We were warmly greeted by the shop owner, Georgeanne Fimbres, who I had arranged a private lesson in floral design with.

My Mom was so excited, as many years before, she had expressed an interest to me in learning about floral arranging.  I had always kept the idea in the back of my head, and when I called Georgeanne, she was so eager to create this experience for us.  So check it out, in pictures, all the fun we had!

Georgeanne had cleared off a work space for us and started us off with a lesson in flower tools and how to work with roses.

Once educated, we picked out our flowers that would later become our arrangements.  My Mom likes clean lines, and I prefer romantic and whimsical arrangements.  We both had strong preferences of which flowers we wanted to work with.

My Mom chose to work with reds, yellows and purples.

I chose pink, blue and yellow flowers.

We plugged away, and our arrangements began to take form!  Check out our completed flower arrangements.  We each love our creations and are so proud of our work!

What a perfectly special afternoon, and it was even more amazing that I shared it with the best lady on the planet!  You should all have afternoons with your Mamas like I had, too.  If you’re in Tucson, consider setting up an afternoon at Villa Feliz.  (520-790-9500)  Georgeanne Fimbres is an elegant woman, and her flower shop reflects all of her joy she spreads with beautiful colors and stunning flowers.

My song of the day is the first “flower” song that entered into my head.  Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond made “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” at hit in the 1970′s, and it has carried on to be a karaoke duet favorite ever since.  Click HERE to hear the song on Youtube and to watch some very dated video footage of two musical icons while I take time to smell the roses that remind me of a perfect day.
