…Your Mom Called!

Posted on the 22 May 2014 by #hartchronicles @jewelsjaye

My mother has been in rare form here lately! And the saga continues…

So I’m footloose and fancy-free as I pop into the front office to check my mailbox before lunch!  While passing the front desk, chaos ensues…

Me: Hi Michelle! (our receptionist)

She: Hi Mrs. Hart! Your mom called. (smiling)

Me: (I stop and return to the front desk, thinking that she meant one of my students’ moms) Who’s mom?

She: Your mom. (still smiling)

Me: (crickets; confusion on my face because… why would my mom call her?)

She: You do have a mom right? (her smile immediately fades; worried that she’s said something wrong)

Side bar: At this point I realize that the look on my face is causing Michelle to think that I either don’t really have a mom, or my mom is dead, or that she received a prank phone call from a con artist or stalker posing as my mother and she’s given them information that they could use to track and kill me. (Yes, that was the look on her face!)

Me: Wait! Oh ok, my mom! Yes, I do have a mom! (acknowledging that this conversation has gone on far too long at this point, and could have easily been open and shut!)

She: Yes, YOUR mother called the school looking for you today! (pointing and nodding at me)

Me: Oh my gosh! (pretty sure my jaw dropped)

She: (continues) She asked me if you were at school today, and if I had physically seen you because she hadn’t heard from you and you’re here alone! (Yes, she said it all and I, being the strapping 31-year-old that I am, morphed into a 5-year-old right there at the front desk. And she continues…) I get these calls about students all the time, but for faculty it’s rare! It actually livened up my day!

Me: (it all came flooding into my head at once) Yeah! I’ve been so busy! I’ve missed her calls, and I haven’t called her back! I also haven’t posted anything on social media, so being that it’s day 3… The authorities would have been called next! THANK YOU Michelle! You just saved me a visit from the police! I’ll go call her right now!

She: (laughing at my embarrassment and front desk rant) Don’t worry! My mom does the same thing, and I’m much older than you. Some things will never change!

Me: (blushing) Thanks for the message Michelle, I’m so sorry!

Immediate thought…

“Oh my gosh MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! You’re embarrassing me in front of my friends!!!”
