CNN: French Intervention in Mali  Between January and February 2013, French military forces were rapidly deployed to northern Mali.  There, they fought alongside Malian Government troops, retaking considerable territory from hostile Islamist insurgents.  This military intervention has been characterized by the movement of a significant number of self-propelled armoured vehicles through the Sahara Desert.

Al Qaeda operatives and armed members of the Nigerian Islamist sect known as Boko Haran are believed to be active within this theater of conflict.  As of this writing, French air strikes may have killed hundreds of people here. Whether you are for or against the Intervention in Mali there is no mistaking the gratitude and relief the locals feel towards the French for freeing them from their oppressors.  (Freelance Writer B.E.
