a Walk in SoHo

Posted on the 09 April 2013 by Kcsaling009 @kcsaling

I had an assignment in my photo class that was, simply, “people.” What better place to seek out people than in the teeming metropolis we know as New York City? And better yet, what better time to take a chance exploring and walking around in some of my favorite spots in New York City? Let me take you on a little photo tour of some of the things I love about the Big Apple.

This just makes me think of the Jack Johnson song. “Pictures of people takin’ pictures of people takin’ pictures of people…” And then we segue back into icons of New York – Grand Central Terminal in all its Gotham glory, and the Chrysler Building looming overhead.

It’s a goodly walk from Grand Central Terminal to SoHo and back. Usually, my husband and I take the subway when we need to get around in town, but for whatever reason, the 6-train was down, so we ended up walking through Union Square, down Lafayette, and into the fashion district when the art was in full swing and the fashionistas were on parade. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

I used this last picture for my photo class. It isn’t the greatest, but I love that this guy is nodding off in his own little world, seemingly apart from the hustle and bustle of the street.

This guy caught me taking pictures as he was blowing bubbles at the passers-by, and he grinned. Not a hey-come-on New York City grin, but a smile between childish co-conspirators grin. We were both reveling in the joy of being six again and thinking that blowing bubbles was the coolest thing on earth.

My wanderings led me to the Union Square farmers’ market. I ended up grabbing some of that tomato sauce, by the way. I have gnocchi planned for sometime in the near future. It was going to be this week, but my schedule didn’t cooperate. I still have a wonderful recipe to share with you tomorrow, but sadly, it’s not going to be gnocchi. I can only hope that this craziness at work is going to subside, but it’s a relief to be able to escape into the chaos of the city, and into the little snippets of it that I can capture and, hopefully, clip into art.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful week!
