…Act Surprised

86OscarPoster_SpotlightHappy Oscar Sunday!

For film lovers, there are few greater nights than Oscar night. For 3 to 4 hours we get to relive all of the great moments in film of the last year. The stories that inspired us, and made us laugh and cry, are celebrated as only Hollywood can.

Unfortunately that involves an awards ceremonies that are usually quite predictable. However, this year promises a bit more excitement. With three top contenders vying for the top prize, it’s hard to say who will win.

True, that uncertainty could turn into a sweep by “American Hustle,” but for now we can dream, and hope they’ll surprise us.

Even if it is somewhat rigged, it’s still fun to root for our favorites, and cast our imaginary ballots (see our picks/best guesses below).  So, here’s to a great Oscars night, win or lose, it’s a great night for film.

Best Actress:

Stephanie: Dame Judi Dench for “Philomena”

Zer: Amy Adams for ” American Hustle”

Best Actor:

Stephanie: Chiwetel Ejiofor for “12 Years a Slave,” but I’m pulling for you Leo, and allow for the possibility of McConaughey victory.

Zer: Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Wolf of Wall Street” — however, the odds do appear to be in Mr. McConaughey’s favor.

Best Supporting Actress:

Stephanie: June Squibb for “Nebraska”

Zer:  June Squibb “Nebraska” — I wouldn’t put it past the Academy to award this to Ms. Lawrence two years in a row, but given the other nominees, I feel that the veteran actress has an advantage.

Best Supporting Actor:

Stephanie: Jared Leto for “Dallas Buyers Club”

Zer: Jared Leto for “Dallas Buyers Club”

Best Foreign Language Film:

Stephanie: This is a complete shot in the dark, but I’m going with “Omar.”

Zer: Based on the pure scientific method of closing my eyes and pointing — “The Hunt”

Best Animated Feature Film:

Stephanie: Disney’s “Frozen”

Zer: Disney’s “Frozen”

Best Director:

Stephanie: Alfonso Cuarón for “Gravity”

Zer: Alfonso Cuarón for “Gravity”

Best Picture:

Stephanie: “12 Years a Slave” (but I’m pulling for a “Philomena” or “Nebraska” upset…we could use the excitement)

Zer: This is one of the tightest races in recent years, but after much deliberation I’m going with “Gravity.”
