An Unusual Bus Journey…

Posted on the 05 February 2013 by Bellshann @bellshann

I had a very unusual bus journey today whilst heading into town. I left at about 10.15 and it’s not very common for me to get a bus around this time so I’m not sure if it’s like this usually, but it was very busy and people were struggling to find a seat. I’m sure you’re all aware that there are disabled and elderly seats at the front, and they are there for exactly that!

So I was on the bus today minding my own business, thinking about the day ahead when two teenage girls got on with who I will presume is their mother who was in a wheelchair. Quite rightly they sat at the front as normal. Now there was a seat to the right of them still at the front when an elderly man got on with crutches. He seemed to have a problem with the fact that he was going to have to sit in a seat labelled elderly, instead of disabled. Now as an old man with crutches, he really fits both categories and has the right to sit in either chair, but he was adamant that he wanted the disabled chair. He asked the girls to move and their response (numerous times may I add) was “what the fuck, I fucking paid for this bus I’ll sit where I want, there’s a seat right next to me.” They did have a point, but was that really necessary? Why couldn’t they have just quietly gotten up and sat in the seats behind? They carried on talking about the situation for the rest of their bus journey, clearly they have nothing of more interest to talk about. I think it’s such a shame that people in this day and age have to create arguments and negativity. Surely life would be much more enjoyable if it was normal to talk to strangers…much more educational at least.

The funny thing was, further on into the journey after the teenagers and mother had gotten off, a young man was sitting down and noticed and elderly man standing without a seat, and he happily got up and offered his own. Now this my friends, is how the world should be.
