After a rocky technological start, the Oscar season is now in full swing. The snubs, shocks, and speculation has already started flying and we’re in for weeks and weeks more of it.
Once again, due to some kind of mathematical, statistical factor in the nomination process, there are only 9 nominees for Best Picture, a category that allows for ten nominees. I admit, I’m no statistician, but it seems to me that nominating the ten movies with the most votes may be a valid way to go about it, but that’s not the point…today.
No, today we look forward to learning about films most of us had never heard of before yesterday, to guessing at who the big Oscar surprises (or lack there of) will be.
However, the important thing to remember is that an Oscar nomination doesn’t make a film great, a great film makes a film great. Sure, it’s nice for the elite among us (or should I say incredibly removed from most of us) to confirm the greatness of some films. Still, at the end of the day, it’s opinion, informed opinion, but opinion nonetheless.
Of course, I say that because there will be plenty of opinion right here as our Oscar countdown returns. Until then, say what you must be slighted and miffed and obstinate, but its award season, so if you’re going to dish it out you’re going to have to be respectful of what’s dished back in your face.
Also, thank you to the Academy for giving “ParaNorman” some love. Golden Globes you dropped the ball on that one.
