This What to Watch Wednesday, many “Game of Thrones” fans out there find themselves staring down a (possibly) long road until the return of their beloved program for its final season. The show has yet to announce a return date, but most estimates put it around spring 2019.
Horrifying. I know. But on the bright side, that gives us plenty of time to cope with certain things that we all totally already knew, but were ignoring and the finale literally shoved it in our face.
See how I didn’t technically spoil anything there? You’re welcome.
The good news is there’s still plenty of other excellent television to get you through the next year and a half, Thronies. (Yes, that’s what the fandom is called. Own it.)
Of course finding the right recommendation depends on the “why” of your “Game of Thrones” fandom. So, I’ve selected several options based on several motivating factors.
History
To be clear, “Game of Thrones” is not based on actual events. But it does fit nicely beside many period pieces that are. “Gunpowder,” tells the story of the infamous 1605 Gunpowder Plot, which sought to kill King James I by blowing up the houses of Parliament (Guy Fawkes, remember, remember…might ring a few bells). The show, which coincidentally stars Jon Snow (aka Kit Harington), doesn’t quite have an airdate yet, but in the meantime, we can enjoy the trailer.
And while I’m in the historical genre, “Victoria,” which will soon start its second season on Masterpiece PBS is a fantastic look at the life of Queen Victoria and another worthwhile watch.
And while we’re on the British monarchy, “The Crown,” is full of fascinating history and truly excellent performances (John Lithgow as Winston Churchill is unbelievable).
Feminism
If you haven’t picked up on the feminist narrative in “Game of Thrones” yet, just keep on scrolling. If you have and haven’t watched “The Handmaid’s Tale” go watch it now.
Magic
While it might not quite be “Harry Potter” the “Game of Thrones” is a magical land full of magical creatures and sorcery, much like “Outlander.” Swap out Westeros for Scotland and magic for time travel, and you’re there. Add in a touch of history (amongst other things) and I promise you, the wait for season 8 won’t seem quite as long.
Based on a Book
Okay, this is broad, but my recommendation, “Poldark,” honestly checks a few of the previously listed boxes so regardless of why you watch “Game of Thrones,” you should check out this fantastic series and support your local PBS station while you’re at it.
As you can see, there’s no shortage of great TV to fill that Iron Throne shaped hole in your television schedule. So sit back, relax, and bask in this golden age of television.
