Be Nice to Yourself

Be Nice

I love this quote. I know I’ve posted it before, but I just had to dig it up again – sometimes we all just need a reminder to be nice to ourselves. It’s just so dang easy to be mean!

Think about it. Chances all, you’re working on some kind of a goal. Maybe it’s a New Year’s resolution, maybe it’s a goal list, maybe it’s a better job or a better position in your company or creating your own job altogether, maybe you’re trying to live healthier. Goals are great!! What’s not great is this:

I’ll be so much happier when I reach my goal weight.

Life would be so much better if I had a better job.

All I have to do is get through this week/month/year/season/visit/taxes and things will get better.

It’s such an easy trap to fall into. You set your goals for a reason, but don’t put your life on hold just because you’re working toward something else! All this leads to is you looking down on your current life because it doesn’t hold everything that future-fantasy-life holds, and then you miss the good stuff.

Personally, I fall into that “goal weight” trap constantly. I’ll tell you more about that someday when I’m feeling braver. I also fall into the trap of thinking just how much happier I’m going to be thinking about spending the next three years or so in Hawaii and never having to see a miserable cold winter again, unless the hubby and I feel like traveling. If I focused on that, I’d miss out on all the good stuff that I can experience right here and now – like everything on the New York Bucket List! We miss so much because we’re waiting for moments where life will become special, and we forget that those special moments are all around us. We just have to look for them.

And with that, here are some of the items on my goal lists that I’ve checked off – and just some highlights in general!

  • Nice Work (If You Can Get It). We went out and saw Matthew Broderick in this surprisingly charming play during Broadway Week {two-for-one tickets to so many shows!}. The main song is still stuck in my head as I type this.
  • Post Night. My senior students all selected their first duty assignments, and I had the privilege of handing out packets for those who will be joining me in Hawaii. I don’t know who was more excited, them – because it ends the wondering and expectation and now they know they’re going someplace cool, or me – because I know just how cool it’s going to be for them!
  • Superbowl. Superbowl 47 was a great time! My 49ers didn’t win but they made a valiant comeback in the second half, the commercials were charming {thank you to Jeep and Oprah for not only making me cry with your “Home Again” commercial, but for making those of us who serve really feel appreciated!}, and Beyonce…I’m not even a fan but I’ve got to say she killed it. She worked the audience and got everyone involved like a pro, her effects were great and they fit, and she looked like she was genuinely having a good time.
  • Fund-raising for the Run for Autism and Run-Ranger-Run! I’m participating in two major fund-raising ventures right now. One is the Run for Autism, where I’m raising money for research on autism on behalf of my little sister, Karla {see her story here}, and the other is Run-Ranger-Run, a team effort where several of us will be running a combined 565 miles in the month of February to raise money for our wounded warriors! I’m excited to be part of these events – and to be knocking a couple running events off my 101 in 1001!

Hope you’re all set to have a fantastic week!!
