The awards’ season kicks into high gear tomorrow, as the Golden Globes bestow the second greatest honor in entertainment on this years best in film and television.
Of course, the Golden Globes aren’t just about the awards or the drinking or the chance that some celebrity could horribly embarrass themselves on live television. It is also about the host, and this year after three years of watching the tumultuous relationship between Ricky Gervais and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the two finally parted ways.
While some of us might be sad to see Mr. Gervais go (I thought he was funny), we can take comfort in the fact that he’s been replaced with a more than capable duo—Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
The two are making history as the first female duo to host the show. Which is all well and good, but let’s face it, we just care if they’ll be funny or not. The easy answer is yes, they will. As a half of a similar female duo (our invite must have gotten lost in the mail), I’m inclined to assume that they’ll be brilliantly funny. But I understand that there might be some sceptics out there.
True, neither of them is Ricky Gervais. There’s a good chance that there will not be a fake media-created controversy following the awards show.
But will they be entertaining despite this handicap? Yes, they certainly will, and if not, well, it will give the media something to discuss for a week or so…until the Oscars.
