…be Your Own Man

…be your own man

It’s hard to believe, but the awards season is upon movie-lovers. It’s a season of triumphs, tragedies, and oh so few comedies (what’s up with that?). Plus we have the ever-raging battle of Oscars vs. Golden Globes.

Whether or not you were aware of this sibling (or possibly distant cousin) rivalry, it’s real and the Oscars have landed another blow to their small screen loving cousin.

What heinous act have they committed? …you might ask.  They’ve gone and moved their timeline up two whole weeks. GASP!!!

For those lost on why this is a slap in the face to the Golden Globes, let me explain: there is a (probably not entirely true) belief that the outcome of the Golden Globes has an influence on the Oscar nominations.

This calendar shift has many thinking that the Golden Globes are getting shoved into obscurity.  What these “many” fail to realize is that Oscar nominations were in fact due before the Golden Globe ceremonies last year as well.

Also, we don’t watch the Golden Globes to see what the forecast for the Oscars is.  We watch to see just what they’ll let Ricky Gervais get away with this year, and who exactly celebrities thank after they’ve had a few glasses of champagne.

Okay, so the interested among us also like to guess at Oscar nominations too, but will this shift in schedules really impact that?  No, and it’s hard to believe that’s true for anyone else either.

Whether or not this was a logistical act of warfare by the Academy against the Globes may never be known, but I can’t imagine (regardless of motive) that it will truly have much impact.  However, I invite them to surprise me, preferably through unforeseen nomination choices. Do your worst.
