If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter.
- Martin Luther King Jr.
Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day to some of you out there! Happy Monday to the rest of you.
On this day dedicated to one of the great leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, there’s some good news for all of you still steaming over the misquote on the MLK Memorial.
For those of you who weren’t aware of your outrage, here’s the abbreviated version. The creators of the memorial went with an abbreviated quote: ”I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness.”
Which was pulled from the full quote featured above.
Now, some people might say that the essential message of the quote is still intact, and that this shortened version provides a nice clean, succinct version, which fits easily on the side of a memorial.
While others, might throw a mini-hissy fit, and blow a non-issue out of proportion.
Guess who got their way?
Now nothing is set in stone (except the original carved quote), but the National Park Service has 30 days to consult and find a better quotation.
So on this MLK Jr. Day, we can be thankful that our country has come this far.
