In the never ending battle for equality, women took a tiny step forward this week when Professor C. Bodin became the first of her kind — a Lego female scientist.
So, it is quite literally a small step for equality, but it’s something, right?
Lego has long been criticized for promoting gender stereotypes with their building sets and figurines. Their all-time figurine ratio is 4:1 in favor of males.
Of course, there’s always the argument that Legos are a toy that is traditionally marketed to boys. In fact, in recent years Lego has given up entirely on selling traditional Legos to girls and created a separate “Friends” line which features less boxy figurines and stereotypical “girly” colors.
On behalf of all the girls who grew up with primary-colored Legos, and loved them…not cool.
Still, putting Legos past transgressions aside, this seems to be a step in the right direction, even if it is very small.
