This Flick Friday I thought I’d take a moment to acknowledge the fall of a cinematic giant that occurred this past week. I’m writing, of course, about Blockbuster.

Okay, so maybe it wasn’t so much a fall, but more of an inevitable petering out. The news that Blockbuster would be shuttering nearly all of its remaining stores did not come as a surprise.

Although, I suppose it was a surprise that they still had so many open stores. In the age of Netflix and instant streaming, the brick and mortar video store has long been obsolete, so Blockbuster is wisely (although, a little late) deciding to focus on its online services.

Even if you do have a hankering for a good old-fashioned DVD, odds are you’ll get that from a Red Box or Blockbuster kiosk (yes, they have those) at the grocery story.

In spite If its slow demise, Blockbuster did have a good run. Remember the good old days when you would make the trip to the video store, only to find that the film you wanted to see was sold out. You would then have to wander aimlessly around the store hoping that another title would jump out at you. Netflix just doesn’t have that same feeling of accomplishment. Their movies are always in stock.

It’s a shame it had to come to a sad, slow end. Good luck taking on Netflix.
