
If you haven’t already heard about the GIF debate, then you probably don’t know what a GIF is. Or at least you don’t know that it’s called a GIF.
Which puts you on the same page as many GIF enthusiasts who have calling this graphical information format by the wrong name for years. Turns out, it’s pronounced JIF…like the peanut butter.
This revelation occurred this week when the format’s creator received a Webby Award for his contribution to the Web.
Considering the format was created in 1987, it’s been a long time coming.
It’s created such a stir, the White House felt the need to weigh in…they fall on the hard “g” side.
At the end of the day, does the pronunciation matter? Yes, but that still won’t stop people from calling it by the wrong name. You say GIF, I say JIF…but most people still don’t know what we’re talking about.
