…carry a Torch

…carry a torchAll good things must end, and today that thing is the 2012 Olympic Games.  We’re not saying it will be easy.

Although, the first few days will be relatively easy. Tomorrow morning, it may seem like nothing has changed. Afterall, there will still be the closing ceremony to talk about and the few events which occurred over the weekend. However, come Wednesday, you may find yourself running out of Olympic water cooler banter. By Thursday, you may find you’ve forgotten the name of that one sprinter you are such a fan of. And Friday, the knowledge of gymnastics and synchronised diving may have started fade. About Saturday, it will hit you, the Olympics are over.

Without ribbon dancing, fencing, judo, and canoe slalom-ing, what are you going to do with your time?

We have a few suggestions:

Stephanie: You could carry the inspirational spirit of the Olympics with you for at least the next two weeks (sorry but years of witnessing short-lived post-Olympic/New Year’s Resolution swim team/gym joining has jaded me on the subject).  We should also inform you that these athletes do compete outside of the games.  They don’t just pick up the sport once every four years, but let’s face it, most people don’t care about canoe sprinting, except for every four years.  Well it is only two years until the Winter Games.  Good luck and Godspeed.

Zer: You could always try to keep up the guise for a few weeks.  Update all your friends, family and co-workers on the latest in rhythmic gymnastics and water polo.  You may find that after a little while your conversations are being cut short and your texts and phone calls aren’t being answered.  The truth is that outside of every four years, most people don’t care about the majority of the summer Olympic sports.  But don’t panic, there’s some good news.  It’s only two years until we can all start discussing the finer points of curling and speed skating (see you in Sochi, Russia).
