When I started blogging last year, I read all about how the holiday season plays havoc on readership. It can be so slow that several bloggers bow out for the last few weeks of the year.
All this brought to mind an earlier time, when I was young and spry.
I used to perform in a lineup with others my age. We played, sang, and danced every weekend of summer in the park, on stage.
June and July would be crowded– filled with confetti, drunken residents, and popcorn– but the last two weekends of August were silent.
Sometimes the crickets would come out to rock with us, but most days– not a soul would be in the audience.
With the exception of our parents, of course, because in situations like this– until many many years later– parents don’t count.
Many of my friends would choose not to play. The line up would go from 35 to 3. Myself and my remaining performing friends would go nuts in our empty park.
Sure, the crowd would want a cover of a classic Beatles song– but the crowd didn’t show. So…
Instead, we pretended to be stand up comics. Instead, we’d play classic children’s songs with our rock instruments and death metal yells. Instead, I would throw myself off the stage into the adoring arms of my fans dad.
I suppose this is my long-about way of warning new readers of my December tradition. (It’s a tradition if you’ve done it once, right?) There will a medley of random posts between now and the end of the year. If you’re sensitive to too many emails, perhaps you should switch me to weekly messages.
Because when the crowds go quiet, I have a long-running history of getting progressively stranger, day by day.
And unlike parents to teenage-me– you totally count, and deserve the warning.
