You can tell a lot about a person by their eyes. At least, that’s what most of us think. Whether it’s fair or not, the way you’re perceived can be strongly influenced by your eyes.
That’s especially true when it comes to telling the truth. For instance, if someone is avoiding eye contact we assume they’re lying. However if someone is incessantly maintaining eye contact we assume they’re creepy. It’s a double standard.
Mastering the delicate balance between not blinking and “yes I’m paying attention” eye contact is not an easy feat and now one researcher is poking holes in these age-old eye-opening stereotypes. Turns out eye movement may not be as universal a language as was once thought. What’s lying for one pair of eyes may be simply thinking for another, nerves for another, you bore me for someone else, and on, and on, and on…
Basically, human beings are individuals with unique tendencies and habits, so blanketing them all within the findings of one (or many that all did the same thing) study would be silly. It’s a study that indirectly denounces the findings of studies. I do believe we have a paradox.
It’s enough to make your head spin or at least induce an eye roll…but what would that mean?
