“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” the fifth installment in the Impossible series does not disappoint. It doesn’t do anything particularly new or exciting, but it does what its predecessors have down before it, it entertains.
Odds are, if you’re reading this, you know the general gist of the ‘Mission: Impossible,’ films. But for those who may not be as familiar, I’ll provide a bit of background.
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is once again faced with a mission which some might call impossible. This time he has to fight nearly insurmountable odds of success without the support of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF). The secret government task force has been disbanded by CIA Director Hunley (Alec Baldwin) for being too…well, secret.
Out of a job, and on the run from the CIA (long story), Hunt is working to both prove the existence of and take down the crime network known as the Syndicate. It’s a task that takes Hunt around the globe (a few times). I won’t spoil anything for you, but “impossible” once again proves to be an inaccurate description of the mission.
As usual the best part of this film is the IMF’s ragtag team of supporting characters, made up of Benji (Simon Pegg), Brandt (Jeremy Renner), and Luther (Ving Rhames).
This trio is joined by newcomer Rebecca Ferguson as Isla Faust, the British agent with questionable loyalties, and amazing shoes (which she wisely removes during action sequences). She’s a welcome addition to the cast, and we can only hope that there are bigger plans for her in the series.
‘Rogue Nation,’ may not be the biggest blockbuster of the summer, but if you’re a fan of action movies with a fun story and great cast, it’s worth a trip to the theater. And if you’re a fan of the “Mission: Impossible” films it won’t let you down.
