…commemorate

Posted on the 14 April 2012 by Zer @the2women

…commemorateLiving in a world of stranded, grounded, and otherwise ill-fated cruise ships, we are still a society completely fascinated with a maritime tragedy that happened a century ago.

Today, in the wee hours of the morning, marked 100 years since the tragic sinking of the Titanic–a tragedy which still captures imaginations the world over and forever changed ship safety regulations…but clearly didn’t teach us how to avoid the necessity of using them.

This anniversary was memorialized in various ways around the world–memorial services, TV specials, re-released 3D versions of three-hour films, and even commemorative cruises following the exact route the Titanic made so many years ago.  I have to question a couple of decisions that went in to these cruises:

1. That route did not work out so well the first time.

2. Headlines that used the word “commemorative” …really?  Your word choice seems to have reduced the value of this tragedy to the realm of a painted coin and/or plate.

3. To those who chose the word “memorial” …the route still did not work out so well the first time.

So however you choose to remember this historical moment let’s acknowledge its impact and take a moment to remember.
