Hearts were torn asunder throughout Westeros and beyond on Sunday evening as not one, but two beloved characters (arguably three depending on how you define character) met their demise on the critically acclaimed “Game of Thrones.”
Fans of the show are no strangers to heartache. Favorite characters have a habit of meeting untimely ends. It’s a sort of morbid joke surrounding the tale. It’s best to not get attached, and yet we do. Then, inevitably, those beloved…dare I say it…friends meet savage ends and we weep for them.
Little did many (well…a disturbingly large percentage of the GOT audience anyhow) know that the fate they mourned had been sealed more than a decade before when the book that the series is based on was published in the year 2000. Seriously guys, read the books.
Nevertheless, the pain was real, it was true, and it was (in many cases, again a disturbingly large percentage) recorded.
Yes, somewhere out there people record themselves and their friends watching TV, but wait there’s more. They then post it online. I don’t know about you, but I can’t understand where those claims of a narcissism epidemic are coming from.
I understand wanting to preserve special memories, so you can go back and smile 10, 15, or even 20 years down the road…but that’s what your DVR is for.
Do you really want your online legacy to be you screaming at a television screen? Or worse…staring emotionless as beloved characters are slaughtered before your eyes?
Although, I suppose someone must keep record of our time here. Lord help us when the alien/zombie/computer/ape overlords find our time capsules chock full of video reactions to emotional moments of television. What will they think of us?
