By all accounts, “Despicable Me 2″ should be a horrible movie.
First, it has a 2 at the end of its title. Second, the “despicable” individual to which the title refers, has all but lost his evil edge.
So what makes this seemingly doomed sequel work? Well, to put it simply—Minions.
Whether you’re willing to admit it or not, you know you loved the minions in the first film, and in the second they’re back and playing a much larger role. In fact, the film might as well be called “Minions” (in theaters December 2014…seriously)
As Gru (Steve Carell) works with Anti-Villain League agent, Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig), to take down an unknown villain, the lovable, yellow lackeys keep us entertained.
The story isn’t quite as strong as the first film. Maybe it’s because Gru has decided to abandon his career in social deviance, or maybe it’s because Gru’s adversary, El Macho (Benjamin Bratt), just isn’t quite as villainous. But somehow the sequel just doesn’t live up to the original.
Thankfully, Gru’s adopted daughters (Elsie Fisher, Dana Gaier and Miranda Cosgrove) are just as adorable as ever, and make for some very sweet and funny father daughter moments. In the end, it turns out that the film was kind of about the Minions the whole time, which is probably for the best…oh, and of course everything turns out alright for Gru and gang too.
It’s not a bad film, and it does what it’s meant to do—make you laugh.
It may not surpass or live up to its predecessor, but what it lacks in some areas, it makes up for in Minions.
