Summertime is all about the outdoors, and fun in the sun (with a hat and some sunscreen). However, for many office workers, it also means sweaters and space heaters.
If you think that’s an exaggeration, or don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re probably a man. And I have some science to back me up on that.
A recent study published in the scientific journal, “Nature Climate Change,” found that most office buildings set their temperatures by using a formula that’s based on the metabolic rates of men.
Before you start throwing around phrases like “institutionalized sexism,” I think we all can agree that what this is, is a little bit of obliviousness, and more importantly, an opportunity for change. Now that the men know that the office might actually be genuinely cold for a majority of women, we can have an open conversation about change.
Don’t think of it as giving up your power so much as learning to share the power. Most of us just want a few degrees. With those few degrees, not only will you be saving women across the corporate world from having to keep a parka at work in the middle of July, but you’ll also be cutting down on your energy consumption and carbon footprint.
Basically, everyone wins. So, can we please get those few degrees.
