…Defy the Odds

transformers-age-of-extinction-posterIf you found yourself wandering into a screening of “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” this weekend in spite of the awful reviews and word of mouth, you were not alone.

Despite being mercilessly, and universally, hammered by critics, the film had a weekend box office haul of over $100 million in the US alone.

So where was the disconnect?

At what point did we all collectively decide that every single movie critic must have gotten it wrong?  Why did a rating of five percent on Rotten Tomatoes refuse to phase us?

The sad truth is, we may never know.  However, if you believe “science,” and American stereotypes, the answer may be coded into our cultural DNA.

Just look at two of our nations top sports — football and basketball — and it’s clear we have a thing for fast-paced, larger-than-life action.  Add NASCAR into that equation, and it’s easy to see why Americans can’t seem to get enough of Optimus Prime and company.

So while we may know that it’s bad, we just can’t help ourselves.  Or maybe we just like watching giant robots fight?
