It was 140 years ago today that Alexander Graham Bell uttered those immortal words “Mr. Watson–come here–I want to see you.” To which I assume, Mr. Watson responded, “You come here, if you want to see me so badly.”Nearly a century and a half later. We don’t need to even pick our phones up to talk face to face with people halfway around the world, Siri will FaceTime them for us.
Even with all of the character count limits, over-sharing, and countless apps that technology has brought us since, the telephone has held onto that original function, the humble phone call.
What was a huge innovation then, is now a simple thing to us now, but I like to think it hasn’t lost its significance, even if its simplicity has increased.
So, take a moment today to call your mother (as the saying goes) or your father, an old friend, a new friend. Just take a moment to say hi. It changed the world 140 years ago, today it can mean the world.
