…Drop the Other Shoe

Posted on the 27 February 2013 by Zer @the2women

Pope's ShoesTomorrow we’ll witness history as Pope Benedict XVI becomes the first pope in hundreds of years to retire…before death.

And while 2WC is a little upset that his holiness made his big announcement right in the middle of our Oscar countdown (oh the blog posts that will never be), we’re also the forgiving sort (it must be that Catholic upbringing).

Over the past few weeks, there have been plenty of questions surrounding the Pope’s early departure from office, such as:

  • What do you call the retired Pope?  Answer: “Your Holiness Benedict XVI” (Benny for short) and his official title is “pope emeritus.”
  • Where will the Pope be spending his retirement? Answer:  The Mater Ecclesiae convent in Vatican city (don’t worry, they’ve already kicked out the cloistered nuns).
  • Does he get to keep the shoes? Answer: White – yes.   Red – no.

Of course, that last answer comes as a bit of a shock.  During his short time as Pope, his holiness’ name became synonymous with footwear fashion.  The Pope (even if he is just “pope emeritus”), without his red shoes just seems wrong.

Considering this sort of thing hasn’t happened since 1415, it’s a golden opportunity to redefine papal retirement.

So go on Your Holiness, be a little crazy, wear your party papal shoes.  You have our blessing.
