It was recently proclaimed by the Oxford University Press that “selfies” is the 2013 Word of the Year.
Which makes the Merriam-Webster Word of the Year all the more interesting. Instead of going for the flashy and new, they opted for a more common, and some might say, more important word — science.
For those who are curious, Merriam-Webster defines science as:
sci·ence noun \ˈsī-ən(t)s\
: knowledge about or study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and observation
“Science” was chosen based on an increased interest as determined by the number of people looking up the word over time.
Hopefully that reflects better on us than “selfies.” Aside from the fact that apparently a substantial number on people don’t know what science is, it shows an interest to learn more.
Now if we can only figure out what the number two word, “cognitive,” says about us…well, it’s still more encouraging than”selfies.”
…and for those who are curious, here’s the top 10 words of 2013:
science
cognitive
rapport
communication
niche
ethic
paradox
visceral
integrity
metaphor
