Today's the day crusaders. The songs have been sung, the dances danced, the nominated musicals counted down and we are just hours away from the start of the 2019 Tony Awards ... and game 6 of the Stanley Cup ... Don't worry, procedures have been put in place.
In past years we've done a few predictions for the occasion (the Tonys not the Stanley Cup), but this year we thought we'd mix things up (slightly) with our own thoughts for the day. Seeing as we both counted down, it seemed only right that we both get to share our final thoughts before the curtain goes up...

This past week, I've spent a fair amount of time thinking about the themes of this year's nominated musicals. Death showed up a lot (Seriously.), but not surprisingly, one theme in particular dominated this season.
The Temptations crooned about it. " The Prom" fought for it. Lydia Deetz went to the Netherworld and back for it...wait is " Beetlejuice" a comedic take on "Hades...never mind. " Tootsie" found it in disguise. " Hadestown" showed us its power, pain, and persistence. And both revivals reminded us how it finds its way into every time and place.
So what's that theme? Well, it's about love.Which, fittingly enough, is what tonight is about too. So, on that note I'm going to send some of my own to all those nominated, performing, presenting, or otherwise involved in this year's spectacular season. Break legs.

I would say I don't care who wins tonight (for the Tonys, I would never say that about the Stanley Cup), but that wouldn't be entirely true. I have favorites and opinions, but I'm keeping them to myself. It's not that who wins doesn't matter. It does. A Tony win can give a show a huge boost and keep them open for far longer than they would have otherwise been. It, however, doesn't mean it's the best show of the season.
All the nominated shows are excellent as are many, many, many shows that weren't. (Yes, it truly is an honor just to be nominated). And at the end of the day, theater is a very personal experience. So, whether or not the shows, actors, directors, lyricists, choreographers, etc... I think should win do tonight, the shows they've created will still bring me and many other people joy, and that matters. So, good luck to all, and I hope you know that you've already won.
