Fiction Friday: Baby Proof

Emily Giffin fans may be slightly surprised at the much more somber tone of this novel compared to Something Borrowed and Something Blue, the two books she most known for and have been optioned for movies with Something Borrowed recently hitting DVD in August. The main character in Baby Proof is more serious, sarcastic, and is dealing with a rocky marriage and the looming question:
Is motherhood right for everyone?
For me, this answer is no. Maybe that's why I have been wanting to read this novel since I heard the premise in June at the skirt! creative conference I attended where Giffin was the keynote speaker. Although choosing not to become a mother is becoming less taboo (thanks, Sex and the City), everyone I know still expects that a woman must want children.
Giffin handles this difficult topic in an elegant way, especially considering that she has children. To get  into the mindset of a narrator that doesn't want children obviously had to be outside her comfort zone. I wonder how she conducted research? Maybe one of her besties is a childfree example.
I liked this novel, but I did have trouble with the idea that these two had such a perfect marriage except for this one "little" difference: he wants children (after changing his mind from original declaration that he didn't) and she doesn't. For such a well-matched couple, the childish way they shut each other out of their lives didn't sit real with me.
I also think this novel scared me a little because I do worry that my husband or I will change our mind and want children in the future when we have already discussed that we don't. That would be quite a curveball, and Baby Proof makes the case that this conundrum would not turn out so well.
